How To Overcome Social Anxiety, Social Phobia, Or Shyness
My name is Mark Taylor, and for the last 6 years I've suffered from one of the most common - yet least talked about - anxiety disorders in existence.
Social Anxiety.
This disorder didn't just make me a "little shy" around people. No.
In fact, it...
Crippled Every Aspect Of My Life
I was petrified of answering the telephone. Scared of answering the door to a delivery man. I felt intensely anxious buying groceries. I avoided all social situations - and the few I couldn't escape from - were like a living nightmare.
I tried everything from Cognitive Behavior Therapy, "positive thinking", rationalizing that my fears weren't real, even "flooding". Some things worked temporarily - but nothing helped me to completely overcome my social anxiety.
I Still Couldn't Deal With Everyday
Social Situations - Things Most
People Take For Granted
Eventually I gave up. It seemed like I would have to live this way forever.
Every solution I tried didn't work. I still felt gut-wrenching anxiety whenever I was in a social situation. It felt like the world was closing in on me.
I decided something had to be done. I couldn't carry on living like this.
So I started developing my own plan for overcoming social anxiety. I spent months of intensive research into modern therapies, as well as Buddhist psychology - and it was here that I started discovering the answers.
I Boiled Everything Down
To Three Simple Parts...
Finding a way to change how I was thinking (I knew social anxiety was based on irrational fears in my own mind).
Finding a way to expose myself to social situations without suffering from excessive self consciousness and crippling anxiety.
Learning the conversation and social skills that most people learn through experience. My avoidance behavior meant that I was lacking this.
Using these three guide posts, I set about creating my own unique method that would deal with these three aspects of social anxiety.
So here's the question:
Did It Work?
After using this method, I now feel relaxed and and at ease in most social situations. All the simple things I couldn't do before (like buying groceries, talking to friends, relatives, neighbors, the mail man) - I find easy.
It seems funny now, to look back at how hard it was for me before - compared to how easy it is now.
And best of all, I'm now in a relationship with a wonderful person - something I never thought would be possible considering the crippling social anxiety I used to suffer with.
In short: I feel like a new person.
So I believe the answer is: Yes, my method did work.
It worked better than I ever dreamed possible. I have now completely overcome my social anxiety. Once upon a time I never thought I'd be able to say that.
But let's talk about ...
